Composite Aircraft Maintenance Facility
Duluth, Minnesota
Minnesota Air National Guard

LHB provided a conceptual plan, construction documents and construction administration services for the phased construction of a composite aircraft maintenance hanger complex. A study was prepared to help MnANG demonstrate to Congress the need for a new $21 million facility. The study led to funding for design and construction of the facility.

Aircraft maintenance activities are currently conducted in ten separate facilities - ranging in age from 10 years to 50 years old. The facilities are located throughout the base with no direct connection between them.

The Composite Aircraft Maintenance Complex will consolidate most of the maintenance activities into one facility greatly improving maintenance efficiencies.

In addition to consolidation of function, the facility will resolve numerous space shortages existing in the aircraft maintenance and maintenance support functions.

Needs regarding specific structural support issues, Air Guard National Design Policy, building codes, energy efficient systems (such as the use of photovoltaic panels) and other mechanical, electrical, communication, and fire protection systems, were also addressed. Wetlands and storm drainage, sanitary sewer and water main re-routing systems were identified.

See 2003 Summer Perspectives “Preventing Crime Through Design” for safety issues of the building’s design.
See 2002 Fall Perspectives “Responsibly Balanced Designs” for the flexibility and high performance details of the space.
