Dan A. Heldt, PE Pipeline Focus Leader

 Dan has over 20 years of experience designing, specifying, and coordinating pipeline engineering projects, and currently manages LHB’s Pipeline Group. Dan specializes in the design and construction of linear facilities including liquid and gas pipelines and fiber optic cable. His projects have spanned over 450 miles of pipeline, 700 miles of fiber optic cables, and 220 miles of power lines. He has also worked on the design and construction of dozens of pipeline related facilities including pump stations, terminals, and gas and oil measurement facilities.

As a former senior engineer with Lakehead Pipe Line, Dan was responsible for analyzing technical problems and solutions; estimating and monitoring budgets; supervising project teams; designing projects; developing project specifications; specifying project materials; interpreting and implementing codes; administering contracts; supervising field construction; and closing-out projects. He excels at large scale team projects.


David M. Sheedy, PE, LEED AP, CCS, CCCA, Duluth Office Leader

David has over 32 years of experience designing for industrial, educational, governmental, medical and commercial projects. This gives him extensive knowledge of the codes and guidelines necessary for implementing successful and safe projects. David's industrial experience includes designing facilities that produce paper, chemicals, power and steel fabrication. He has often worked on pump stations including: foundation and platform design; drag reducing agent skids for a portable pump station; code review, sizing and specification of blowers and louvers; switchgear building and site planning.

Codes and guidelines that David is familiar with include: the American Concrete Institute's (ACI) Building Code for Structural Concrete, ACI Code Requirements for Masonry, American Institute of Steel Construction Manual of Steel Construction, Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute Design Industry Standards and Uniform Building Code.


David J. Bjerkness, AIA, LEED AP Government Focus Leader

Combining three decades of experience in architectural design and project management, David focuses exclusively on government projects. He leads LHB's Government Focus and is a Vice President and Shareholder of the company, which he joined in 1986. His project management experience with larger projects gives him the skills necessary to manage complex project teams and aggressive timelines.

David excels at developing open lines of communication between the design team and the owner, managing the total quality of the project, accurately estimating schedules and budgets, and ensuring the necessary firm resources to complete the project. He has managed the most recent Minnesota Air National Guard (MnANG) Indefinite Delivery projects with 32 delivery orders and has worked with the United States Forest Services and United States Fish & Wildlife Service, as well as airport and city projects. David understands the design process, policies, and funding procedures for all types of government projects.


David T. Williams, PE, FPE, LEED AP O+M, CDT Sustainable Design Specialist

As part of his expertise in and commitment to sustainable design, David is helping to write the State of Minnesota Sustainable Building Guidelines. He has 29 years of mechanical design experience and has trained internationally on high-efficiency condensing boiler systems.

David leads LHB’s Building Performance Services initiative, which includes providing LEED consultation, energy modeling, life-cycle cost analysis, commissioning, building maintenance and asset preservation consultation. David and his mechanical design team received the Governor’s MnGREAT award, as well as First Place in the 2003 Technology Awards from both the MN Chapter and the Northern Midwest Region of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for their design of the DNR Headquarters in Tower, Minn.

David’s specialties also include overseeing the design and specification of building mechanical systems, forensic engineering services, preparation of cost estimates, and coordination with contractors. Additionally, as a fire protection engineer, David can provide fire safety design services for clients.


Evan C. Aljoe, ASHE, LEED AP, CCCA, Lean/Six Sigma Healthcare Focus Leader

Evan contributes more than 25 years of professional experience as a designer and architect to assure your project goals are met. With experience designing a variety of project types, including commercial high-rise office buildings and parking structures, Evan has focused almost exclusively on the design of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities for the past 18 years.

As a leader of LHB's Healthcare Focus Group, Evan provides the healthcare planning and programming expertise necessary to make your project a success. Evan leads the design efforts of the team and is responsible for the quality of the drawings. Recent additions to Evan's healthcare portfolio include a 64,000 sf medical office building, re-stacking of an existing 90,000 sf multi-specialty clinic, relocation of a hospital in-patient pharmacy, and design of a 20,000 sf heart center addition.

Jay B. Bergman, PE Project Principal

An expert in environmental regulations and permitting, as well as waterways and storm water retention, Jay manages LHB's Municipal, Transportation, and Site Development Department. He has over 28 years of design, construction, and management experience in all facets of civil engineering projects including state and county highways; municipal roadways; parking lots; sanitary, water, and steam distribution systems; storm sewer systems; airport taxiways; landfills; bike trails; and industrial and residential site development.

His experience includes hydrology analysis, waterway hydraulics, on-site waste disposal, storm water retention, waterfront protection, and erosion control. He has provided field experience in construction administration, inspection and staking in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (Mn/DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration’s construction requirements.

Jay's special emphasis on environmental regulations and permitting includes: environmental worksheets, wetland delineation and mitigation, National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water and erosion control permitting, sewer extension permits, special use permits, protected water permits, and demolition landfill permits from the DNR, Mn/DOT, MPCA, Army Corps and other local government agencies.

Joseph D. Litman, PE Public Works Focus Leader

With a focus on the management and design of civil and structural projects, Joe takes an active role in following projects through construction. His 23 years of experience give him a thorough understanding of design and construction processes. He fosters effective communication throughout each project so desired outcomes are achieved between designer, owner, and contractor. 

He is well versed in the design of steel, concrete, timber precast/ prestressed and post-tensioned structures. He has led the design on projects ranging from multi-million dollar industrial structures to smaller-scale historic structure renovations.

Joe’s work includes overseeing the contract, ensuring available resources to complete the project, and quality control. His design experience encompasses all aspects of civil engineering projects, including state and county highways and bridges, municipal roadways, sanitary and storm sewer systems, and site development. His civil construction administration knowledge includes inspection and staking in accordance with Mn/DOT and FHWA construction requirements.


Kevin C. Holm, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, NCARB, CEFPI, CCCA Education Focus Leader

As the leader of LHB’s Education Focus, Kevin coordinates project teams and facilitates clear communication between LHB, contractors, stakeholders, and owners – ensuring that the clients’ ideas, requests and direction are received and integrated into the design. Kevin has over 15 years of experience and is a registered architect in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. He uses tools such as workshops (charrettes) and various sketches and plans to help assess, illustrate and clearly communicate the various components of a project.

Kevin also assists in facility evaluation, conducts code review, quantitative estimating, and bidding and construction administration; he establishes schedules and makes sure they’re met; and he carefully monitors the project budget. With five years of previous experience working for an Architectural/ Construction Management firm, Kevin has considerable experience with Construction Manager Advisor and Construction Manager Contractor approaches as well as with fast-track and design-build approaches. As a Certified Construction Documents Technician, Kevin is proficient in the knowledge of the construction process, contractual relationships, and use of construction documents.


Kim D. Bretheim, AIA, LEED AP BD+C Housing Focus Leader

 With more than 30 years of architectural experience in residential design, Kim has helped clients of LHB’s Housing Studio create high performance, sustainable projects. He has won awards for designs including: student housing, townhomes and condominiums, apartment buildings, supportive housing, and commercial and mixed-use developments.

He is committed to historic preservation and has been instrumental in transforming many of downtown Minneapolis’ warehouses into living, work, and performance spaces for individuals and families. Kim often presents at state and regional conferences on the benefits of sustainably designed housing.


Michael A. Fischer, AIA, LEED AP Minneapolis Office Leader

As an expert on Tax Increment Finance (TIF) District Analysis, Michael has assisted over 90 cities with strategic planning for TIF Districts. He is a Senior Vice President at LHB and currently leads the Minneapolis office. He has more than 25 years of experience as project principal, project manager, project designer and project architect on planning, urban design, educational, commercial and governmental projects.

Michael completed a two-year Bush Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999, earning Masters Degrees in City Planning and Real Estate Development. Prior to attending MIT, Michael was an active member of the Duluth/Superior community. He served on more than 30 committees, boards and community task forces between 1991 and 1996, including a term as City Council President and Chair of the Duluth/Superior Metropolitan Planning organization. During that time, he also managed and designed several award-winning architectural projects. Michael was one of four architects in the country to receive the “Young Architects Citation” from the American Institute of Architects in 1997. Michael currently serves the City of Edina, Minnesota as Chair of the Planning Commission, and Zoning Board of Appeals.

 


Michael Schroeder, ASLA Landscape Architecture and Planning Focus Leader

A licensed landscape architect, Michael specializes in engaging community stakeholders in the design process – with an emphasis on the relationship between places and the experiences people desire. Michael’s focus includes interpretive design, historic preservation, streetscape design, master planning, site design, and community planning and design. He provides expertise to clients including non-profits, community and neighborhood groups, private sector entities, and a wide spectrum of municipal, county and state agencies.

Michael’s projects include urban design consulting for towns and cities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Connecticut, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, Georgia, New Mexico, and North Carolina. His past projects include a corporate headquarters master plan for H.B. Fuller Company in Vadnais Heights, Minn.; an interpretive center for cement manufacturing on a National Scenic Byway in Missouri; master plans/strategic plans for downtown revitalization work in several cities; and on-going consulting for the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Center. Michael has completed context sensitive design training through the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

 


Richard A. Carter, FAIA, LEED Fellow Commercial Focus Leader

An expert in Performance MetricsTM and sustainable design, Rick is LHB’s Senior Vice President. He is responsible for project leadership, business development, and sustainable design on major projects. During his 23 years at LHB, he has guided the company’s high performance designers into becoming a force at the forefront of measuring and optimizing building performance. His work helps clients improve their indoor air quality, drive energy efficiency, and maximize resource efficiency.

Rick helped develop the Hennepin County/Minnesota Sustainable Design Guidelines and currently manages the Buildings, Benchmarks and Beyond (B3) Project that includes the execution of sustainable guidelines for the State of Minnesota. He is an adjunct faculty member and teaches a graduate-level sustainable design course at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design. 

Rick co-founded LHB’s Green Team in 1992, a multi-discipline team dedicated to incorporating high performance into all projects by educating staff and researching sustainable design techniques; that effort grew over the last two decades into a firm-wide emphasis on sustainability and high performance. He served as a member of the Minnesota Climate Change Advisory Group and a co-chair for the Minneapolis-St. Paul Mayor’s Green Manufacturing Initiative. 

R. Bruce Cornwall, AIA Project Principal

With over 28 years of architectural experience, Bruce is known as a strong advocate of environmentally responsible architecture. He specializes in working with higher education and community facilities as a project principal, manager, designer, and planner. He considers resource management, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency to be integral components of architectural design and campus planning. In addition, he has an extensive background in graphic design and has illustrated a book on earth-sheltered housing.

He has served as the principal planner for many colleges in the Minn.SCU system including Metropolitan State University, Minneapolis Community Technical College, Mesabi Range College, Ridgewater College, Lake Superior College, and Riverland College. He is the Director of Integrated Design and Campus Planning in LHB’s Minneapolis office and currently working on a variety of planning projects including a campus signage study for Normandale Community College, a study for Minn.SCU involving space planning for Applied Technology programs, and the recently completed master plans for South Central College and Normandale Community College.


Timothy E. Korby, PE, LEED AP Project Principal

Tim has 26 years of civil engineering experience working for various cities throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. As a result of his municipal experience, Tim knows and understands a community’s engineering needs and unique problems. These include expansion of urban infrastructure to meet development needs, municipal surveying, planning and development issues, intense maintenance practices for municipal improvements, and development of parks, trails, and similar amenities during the developing years. He also has expertise in traffic and transportation issues ranging from addressing neighborhood traffic studies to local roadway design projects, environmental projects including solving neighborhood drainage problems, preserving wetlands, reviewing or designing on-site drainfields permitting, well head and ground water protection, stormwater pond design, and design and construction of Municipal State Aid.

 


Thomas R. Cook, PE, CDT Industrial Focus Leader

With over 25 years of experience in heavy industry engineering and construction, Tom has gained a thorough understanding of industrial sites. He leads LHB’s Industrial Focus and frequently supervises site construction managers, safety professionals, and field engineers along with contract field engineering and staff. He works closely with industrial clients on design development, contract development, construction management, and project implementation.

His diversified background includes leading the construction management of major capital construction projects including a $235 million pulp mill. He has also worked on a $89 million wastewater treatment plant expansion, the Timberwolves Arena roof support, and wind turbine electrical vaults and footing supports.


William D. Bennett, PE Chief Executive Officer & Board Chairman

Bill has 37 years of experience designing and managing projects for all types of government and private clients. His direct involvement in projects at the federal, state, county and city level gives him a thorough understanding of regulations and procedures, and helps him plan and coordinate projects. This experience also provides him access to diverse community groups and an awareness of funding sources. Bill often serves as a community liaison and advisor with the project teams, and public and private organizations.

Bill's commitment to economic development in the region can be seen in his active involvement and leadership with community and professional organizations, such as the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Greater Downtown Council (GDC), and American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC/MN). As a GDC Board Member and Chair, Bill initiated the design of planning concepts that would improve the downtown area and connections to Canal Park and the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center (DECC). These concepts are being used to help attain federal funds. Bill also uses his community involvement to support business interests, foster relationships with the City, and encourage economic development in the region.

Bill helped create and chaired the Duluth Chamber's Military Affairs Committee (MAC). His involvement helped to successfully strengthen MnANG's 148th Duluth base’s position in the Nation’s defense organization by bringing  together a regional effort that included other Chambers of Commerce, businesses, education, and local, state, and federal politicians to support the base.
