Phase 2 of Superior Street to be completed November 15

DULUTH, MN — The second phase of the Superior Street reconstruction project will wrap up next week, city officials announced Thursday.

The road will reopen on November 15 with a celebration at 10 a.m. in front of Pizza Luce.

The project, which started in April, has been delayed due to record-breaking rain, a crane pad which had to be removed and a water main reconstruction which took longer than expected due to shallow bedrock, the city said.

Officials say some other delays were expected, such as the Essentia Health medical district renovation project, as well as the preparation of the housing development on the 300 block of East Superior Street.

In mid-August, the intersection with 1st Avenue East opened to both north and southbound traffic.

According to Duncan Schwensohn, the project manager, crews worked six days a week throughout the entire project to make sure as much work as possible was completed.

A block of Superior Street between 3rd and 4th Avenue East will have temporary asphalt surfacing so the road will be open for the winter, and it will be replaced with concrete next spring.

Sidewalks in that same area will also have temporary asphalt until next year.

That work is expected to take about six weeks and will be done at the same time as the third phase.

The third phase will close the intersection of Lake Avenue and Superior Street, and will also include the Superior Street to 3rd Avenue West.

A meeting regarding the third phase will be held on November 19 from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn.

City staff members, as well as MnDOT and Northland Constructors, will have an overview of the area, as well as the Lake Avenue Bridge project.
