CSAH 48/97 Minnehaha Avenue Reconstruction - Area Enhancements

Project Type: Area Enhancements

Client: Hennepin County

In cooperation with Hennepin County and the Longfellow Business Association, LHB’s landscape design team developed a streetscape plan for the Minnehaha corridor to complement the utility and road improvements being implemented between Lake Street and 46th Street.

Focusing on commercial nodes, an angled checkerboard paving pattern calls special attention to retail and business establishments and recalls the particular angle of intersection of the cross streets that are unique to that area of Minneapolis. A unified street furniture palette creates a cohesive pedestrian experience and activates business frontages as areas of gathering and relaxation.

Several new bike racks complement the new exclusive bike lanes and traffic control bump-outs along Minnehaha, and a tree replacement scheme will fill out the overhead canopy and increase the amount greenspace in the area. Ease of maintenance and sustainability were primary considerations in all materials selections.

The specialty paving pattern employs standard sidewalk concrete, so future replacement will not require special training or materials, and high-quality furniture options will significantly outlast budget alternatives and require less maintenance on the part of the business partners who adopted them in partnership with Hennepin County.
