Project Type: Hospital Remodel

Client: Essentia Health

Essentia Health engaged LHB to remodel 11,000 square feet of existing space within St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN to provide a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This new NICU provides eighteen private patient rooms, with two pair of adjacent rooms configured with partition walls that permit them to be opened into larger, double rooms for families with multiple infants.

These private rooms provide privacy as well as control the acoustic, thermal, and light levels appropriate for infant health and development. The private patient rooms include sleep sofas, recliners, storage, and refrigerators, allowing families to remain with their infants at all times.

Eleven decentralized nursing stations are located along the corridor and directly outside each patient room. These nurse workstations have windows and computers to allow staff to monitor and view the infants from outside the room. Staff support spaces are centralized within the unit and include a nurse work area, storage, soiled and clean utility, med room and milk lab.

Directly adjacent to the new NICU, a family lounge was also developed to accommodate a family’s needs during their stay, and includes a small kitchen, a laundry, showers and educational spaces to make the families more comfortable and provide a place to meet receive support from guests and extended family members. Spaces were also created to accommodate NICU staff offices, a conference room, break room and call room.
