Lake Superior College Health and Science Center
Project Type: Predesign and Design of Health and Science Center; Duluth, MN
Client: Lake Superior College
LHB assisted LSC to implement the second phase of their master plan by providing pre-design, design, and construction administration services for a $13 million Health and Science Center facility. The facility consists of 50,800 sq ft of new space and 33,250 sq ft of remodeled space. LHB worked with design architect, Ross Barney Architects, to design the project to LEED Silver and to meet the State of Minnesota’s B3 Sustainable Guidelines.
LHB developed the pre-design for this new Health and Science Center facility. Spaces were based on an outpatient clinic model; reorganizing nursing facilities into a hospital/nursing-center model to create a real-world environment for learning. Science labs were restructured and reorganized for shared preparation and storage center space, thus maximizing square footage and equipment usage. Technology components included nursing and outpatient centers which simulate workplace settings rather than traditional lab/classroom settings. Spaces are equipped with contemporary clinic and hospital technologies for training.
Many sustainable elements are designed into the facility including multi-use spaces, displacement ventilation, and a multi-story facility with high mass construction. The facility also boasts aggressive energy goals, including daylighting. The relocation of an entrance road was conducted to minimize runoff to an adjacent trout stream.
