Whitney Fine Arts Plaza
Project Type: Landscape Architecture, Minneapolis, MN
Client: Minneapolis Community & Techincal College (MCTC)
When the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) decided to do a major renovation and addition to the Helland Student Center, they decided it was also time for a renovation to the plaza area around it, including the Whitney Fine Arts entrance. This plaza lies at the edge between the eastern part of Loring Park and the campus, but it felt more like a wall than an inviting transition.
LHB redesigned the plaza using low planters filled with soft swathes of native plants and long, low walks and steps leading to the Fine Arts building entrance and the Student Center. In addition to the aesthetic and pedestrian improvements, the redesign also uses pervious pavers, much more green space, and an underground infiltration system to improve the stormwater functions of the site.
