City of Lakes Loppet Wirth Timing Building
Project Type: New Timing Shed; Minneapolis, MN
Client: City of Lakes Loppett and Minneapolis Parks and Rec Board
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the City of Lakes Loppett Nordic Ski Foundation hired LHB to design this elegant building specifically for the Junior Olympic Nordic Ski Championships at Theodore Wirth Park in 2011. The building needed to be functionally designed to provide views of the start/finish area by timers and officials, as well as to fit into the beauty of the natural setting. One other very interesting feature is that the building is mobile, essentially sitting on large tubular steel “skis” to allow the organizers of future races at Wirth the flexibilty to relocate the stadium area. The building was completed on a fast track schedule just in time for the event which was notably one of the best Junior Olympic events ever and the first in the Midwest for many years.
