Project Type: Addition and Remodel

Client: ALLETE

LHB is working with ALLETE Minnesota Power providing professional architecture, landscape architecture, and engineering services for a remodel of their first floor building, lobby addition, and outdoor plaza redesign for the Lake Superior Place in downtown Duluth. The original plaza was constructed in 1985 and serves as a public gathering and event space, but is outdated and no longer serves its purpose.

LHB, in collaboration with ALLETE, facilitated a stakeholder engagement process to gain input on what was desired for the redesigned plaza space. The original 1985 goals for an enhanced pedestrian function and an aesthetically attractive space to serve as the entrance into downtown from the Lake Avenue bridge was re-confirmed during the first meeting. Other key themes that came out of the stakeholder process included:

  • Providing a more fluid pedestrian route to Lake Avenue and Canal Park
  • Opening up the public space for better movement with large sweeping curves
  • Offering a variety of outdoor rooms with different seating types and sizes for large groups as well as intimate gatherings
  • Designing site elements that offer shade and/or a canopy roof
  • Developing a lighting scheme that addresses safety while offering a signature pedestrian atmosphere
  • Showcasing the local region through design and selected landscaping and surfacing materials
  • Telling the story of the past, present, and future of Minnesota Power as a natural resource company through interpretation and wayfinding
