Bauman Hall Conditions Assessment
Project Type: Conditions Assessment, Jasper, MN
Client: Reclaim Community
In 2019, LHB conducted an historic conditions assessment of Bauman Hall for Reclaim Community. The building was originally constructed in the 1880s in a town nearby and moved to Jasper around 1908. It has served primarily as a general/grocery store at ground level and a multi-purpose assembly space at the second floor.
Following the opening of a new gymnasium/auditorium at the Jasper School in 1939, the second story assembly function greatly diminished. In the early 1980s, the ground floor of the building was converted to Jasper’s senior center. It remained the senior center until 2009 when, due to structural concerns and upkeep costs, the city divested itself of the building. The building has remained largely unused since.
Our conditions assessment included identifying and prioritizing maintenance and repair needs of the building as well as its historic preservation needs and reviewing the building for accessibility and building code compliance. Of particular concern at this building is evidence of failure at the quartz masonry mass walls on the east façade. The report looks in depth at possible causes and proposed solutions to address this delicate area.
