Duluth Children's Hospital
Project Type: Hospital Remodel Duluth, MN
Client: St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic Health System (SMDC)
Duluth Children’s, an affiliate of SMDC Health System, engaged LHB to develop standard finishes, furniture, and design features to be implemented in all future Duluth Children’s interior design renovations. The Rathke-Bachhuber Children’s Emergency Department and the Pediatric Pre-Operation suite are two recent renovations located within St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN to incorporate these design standards.
The Rathke-Bachhuber Children’s Emergency Department comprises 3,400 sq ft of space immediately adjacent to the existing St. Mary’s Emergency Department, and includes seven exam rooms, waiting room, and nurse station dedicated to pediatric patients. Bright floor patterns and embossed ceiling tile, as well as a lighthouse and fish tank in the waiting area, provide positive distractions for children who are sick and often frightened by unfamiliar surroundings.
The Pediatric Pre-operative suite is a private observation space for a child and family located within the existing pre-operative unit. Designed using the Duluth Children’s brand finishes, flexibility was incorporated through the use of fold away work surfaces and cubicle curtains. The space can be arranged to accommodate one or two patients and their families. Sliding glass doors with patterned window film provides privacy from the rest of the pre-operative unit.
