Project Type: Historic Structures Report
Client: North House Folk School
LHB was selected by the North House Folk School to conduct a Historic Structure Report (HSR) of the Jim Scott Fish House in Grand Marais, Minnesota. In partnership with the Cook County Historical Society, North House wanted to improve the visibility and public access of the Jim Scott Fish House, while also accommodating the school’s need for critical addition of classroom spaces. The primary goal of this HSR will be to fully assess the condition of the structure, feasibility, and cost of rehabilitation given its current condition, and the possibility of its relocation. Funds for this project have been secured through the State of Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
As part of the HSR, LHB will provide the following:
- Historical Research: Confirm the history of the Scott Fish House and a chronology of its development and use
- Physical Description: include site, interior, and exterior features
- Existing Condition Survey: Document detailed physical description and current condition of the building elements (i.e. foundation, structural members, shakes/shingles, etc.)
- Work Recommendations and Requirements for Work: Outline a proposed treatment based on the current condition of the building as well as North House’s future plans for classroom site development. Outline options for relocation that will enable its future interpretation and use.
